Despite not being well-known for tourist attractions there’s actually a lot to enjoy in Sacramento, California. The best area to visit is Old Sacramento which is a hub of eateries, museums, shopping and exceptional river views. There’s the California State Railroad Museum, a commemorative place to learn all about the railways in the area, past and present. The museum has more than 225,000 square feet of space with restored trains, locomotives and information on railway expansion.
Young families will really enjoy Sacramento Zoo and the animals’ antics or for very little visitors, there’s Fairytale Town. This amusement park in Sacramento has more than 25 oversized fairy-tale playsets where small children can re-enact their favorite fairy stories.
Head to Capitol Park, home of the California State Government since 1869. It has a worthwhile museum to visit which has excellent art exhibits, governors’ portraits and murals to admire. To continue the art theme, visit the Crocker Art Musuem which has more than 15,000 pieces of art to marvel at. The art consists of home-grown talent as well as international pieces from Africa, Oceania and Asia.
The Midtown in Sacramento is the trendiest area, running from E Street to R Street and 16th to 29th Streets. As well as being a hip place to visit, it’s a large residential neighborhood and also a busy business district. There’s plenty of fun nightlife to try, some vibrant bars and for shoppers, there are some excellent independent boutiques.
Historic Landmark District and features plenty of culture from the old days of California. With five museums to visit, there’s lots to admire and no one ever goes hungry as it’s home to hundreds of restaurants. Those with a sweet tooth will find something sugary to munch on while strolling along the riverside in the Californian sunshine.
Learn about wheat and cotton at Sutter’s Fort which was home to Swiss Immigrant John Sutter in the 1840’s. The fort was built to protect his harvested crops and became home to many immigrants who came to Sacramento and helped harvesting wheat, cotton and beans.
Finally, for shopping visit Old Sacramento for specialty shops, independent boutiques and home-grown goods. Antique lovers will adore Antique Plaza which is a special antique enclave just outside of the city. There are hundreds of antique sellers showing off their wares and vintage items. There’s great outlet shopping in Folsom Boulevard which is worth visiting for half a day for excellent bargain hunting. For mainstream shopping and designer boutiques, visit the Country Club Plaza Mall in Butana Drive, home to the best American brands and other international names.
